CHAPTER 6 - WHAT ELSE
Action speaks louder than words is a common adage. Be a mentor to your children. It should not be 'do what I say and not what I do'. There are drunkards today who get so annoyed seeing their children sipping alcohol and smoking. Some children are saying within themselves 'Dad cannot keep to what he says, why should I keep to it?'. The Bible says concerning Jesus;
Act 1:1 The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach
The doing came before the teaching; Jesus began to do and to teach.
Do not teach your children the act of grumbling and complaining. Some parents complain about everything- government, their boss, their spouse, etc-, and the children are watching and learning. Do not make your children feel inferior, always encourage them wisely. There was this story of a man who went with his son to his school graduation and award ceremony. Many children were given awards but none went to his son. When ever a child was called to collect his/her award, the man would look at his son and say, 'these are real children'. The boy almost wept while his dad kept mocking him. At the end of the ceremony, they were going back home with their corroded and slow vehicle, whenever a fine car or jeep overtakes them, the son would look at the dad and say, 'these are real Cars'.
Teach your children the act of giving. Many children grow up always saying 'give me', they grow up stingy. The scripture says;
Act 20:35 ... remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
So teach them the more blessed path of giving. If you take out time to teach the young ones how to give, you would not lack at your old age, because your children would have perfected the act of giving, and they will always give to you. If you are a christian and you go to church, give your children money to put in the offering bag. Sometimes give them money to give to the poor and needy.
If you have not dedicated yourself to serve the Lord your maker. Have a rethink. God gave you the power of choice. Please choose to serve Him. For you to read this far, you have a desire to bring forth responsible and God-fearing children. In training them properly you cannot give what you do not have. Why not be responsible first and it would be easier to bring up responsible kids. As you come to the Lord, Be blessed in Jesus Name. Amen.
